Roger Browne 2005

19/09/2005 - Dawson Open Cut Mine - Fall

On September 19, 2005, Roger Bruce Browne, 41 was killed after he fell more than 50m at the Dawson Mine. He was found the following day at 10.30am after his partner contacted the mine repeatedly to say he had never come home.

Mr Browne was employed as Senior Mining Engineer in the Technical Services Department at the Dawson Mine and responsible for the Leightons and Ostwald Brothers Contracts at the Dawson Mine at Moura. As part of his duties, he was designing a change to a highwall at Dawson North.

It was suggested that he look at disused pit 8C as it had similar conditions and overlaying rock and was close to the office, about 10 minutes' drive. It is apparent that he visited the area on the morning of the incident and was goingback for another look.

A search was launched for Mr Browne after he did not return home from the mine, run by Anglo Coal Australia. Part of Mr Browne's job was to design changes to one of the higher walls at the mine site.

A Coroner's Inquiry failed to say how Mr Browne came to fall from the wall.

This accident claimed the life of Roger Browne
